More about the project ...
The Teaching Maths for Social Justice research project ran from June 2013 to July 2014 and involved a group of five teacher researchers, in four different London schools, and myself as university-based researcher.
The aim of the project was to use a participatory action research model to develop teaching approaches and ideas which address issues of social justice in the secondary maths classroom.
The following framework was used by the research group for developing ideas on teaching maths for social justice:
The aim of the project was to use a participatory action research model to develop teaching approaches and ideas which address issues of social justice in the secondary maths classroom.
The following framework was used by the research group for developing ideas on teaching maths for social justice:
- Adopt a collaborative, problem-solving, student-led approach to learning, which engages all students.
- Recognise students’ real-life experiences in order to make maths more relevant and meaningful.
- Use maths as a tool for students to develop awareness of their social, political, economic and cultural situations.
- Develop agency so that students appreciate how to use maths to generate an argument for social change.
- Develop critical awareness, among students, of the nature of maths and its position and status in society.
